But divorce left her penniless and angry, and she turned to shoplifting. "She was a millionaire's wife, then she became destitute," said her friend, Brian Tennant. "She was angry at the system for letting her husband go." State police on Wednesday announced the arrest of the 62-year-old Charlebois after discovering more than $250,000 worth of stolen designer clothing in her lakeside home.

Authorities described it as a clothing warehouse: Many of the more than 6,200 pieces were still on the store hangers with the price tags on. There was no evidence that she tried to sell the clothing and no indication she wore any of it. In fact, many weren't even her size. "I had no idea of the extent of the inventory she had," said Tennant, who befriended Charlebois three years ago when he bought an old car from her. "I thought she was buying the stuff.

Why would I suspect a nice old lady of lifting added Tennant, who said he often drove Ms. Charlebois to the malls, where she would emerge with bags full of merchandise. According to friends, she was once married to millionaire gas-well investor Robert Charlebois. She lived ed said Terrence Barton, regional in a $1.3 million home on the California coast and drove two Mercedes Benzes and a Jaguar. The couple divorced in 1984.

Charlebois was never paid the alimony ordered by the court. Last year, a notice of foreclosure was filed against her in court. Tennant said Charlebois would leaf through catalogs and make lists of the clothes she wanted. Then she would go to the mall, with Tennant or on the bus, and come home with stuffed shopping bags. She would hang up the clothes and methodically make a list of everything she had stolen, Tennant said.
