(PA demand for auto and aircraft issues late in the afternoon steadied an irregularly lower stock market Thursday in one of the slowest trading sessions in several days. Aided by the late buying many early losses were pared and some stocks moved into plus territory, with a few favored shares vancing more than a dollar. For the most part, closing prices were thoroughly mixed. The market opened on a lower trend and coasted in dull trading until late afternoon. Rails garnered enough support to post an average gain through most of the session.

At one time the heavy industrial group showed a loss of almost a point, but this was later pared. Utilities swung from side to side most of the day and closed a fraction lower on average. Business moved at a slow clip as sales dipped to the lowest point of the week. A 470.000 volume in the final hour, brought total sales to 1.650.000 shares. At the close, gains held a fair majority.

Of the 1,080 issues traded, 521 advanced, 332 declined and 227 were unchanged. The Associated Press 60-stock average was unchanged at 76.1. Rails made only advance of the day, closing averaou, point higher. Industrials were unchanged and utilities were a small fraction lower. 16 An Elmiran yesterday became the first naval reservist in the area to receive orders to report for active duty. William J. Newell of 129 Morrow printer first class, has been directed to report to a Navy medical officer at Buffalo for an examination before Aug. 16. If he- is fit, Newell will report to the Brooklyn receiving station for assignment.

Newell is a member of Organized Naval Reserve Surface Division 3-62. A World War veteran, he served four years in Alaska and the Aleutians. Newell is employed by Moore Business Forms. He is married and has two children. Two other members of the Organized Reserve here have volunteered for active duty and left for their new posts.

Elmira aliens were reminded yesterday that they are still subject to provisions of the Alien Registration Act of 1940. Attorney General J. Howard McGrath in Washington, D. outlined the obligations of aliens who come under its provisions. Aliens who have been in the United States more than 28 days, unless regulations provide a later date.

are required to register. If they have been admitted to the country for permanent residence, such aliens, must notify the Commissioner Immigration and Naturalization, Washington, of any change of address within five days of the change; those who are in the country on a temporary basis are required to notify the commissioner of their address every three months, whether or not the address has changed. A. R. Mackey, acting commissioner, cautioned all persons coming within the provisions of the law that failure to comply with the act will subject them to prosecution and punishment.

For all reports to the commissioner, he said, a printed postcard should be obtained from the area Immigration and Naturalization Office or the local postoffice. 9 Area Men Enlist In Army, Air Force Nine Elmira and area men were enlisted into the Army and Air Force Wednesday at Binghamton through the Elmira recruiting office.
